Proton Oct 2024 sales up 13.6% to 12,799 units, YTD of 125,557 is 3.1% down vs 2023, 18.9% market share

After a slightly disappointing September, Proton’s sales have bounced back in October 2024 to 12,799 units. This figure, which as always also includes exports, represents a 13.6% jump over the previous month as the total industry volume (TIV) also rebounded to an estimated 70,668 units (up from 56,067 units in September).
The TIV growth has outpaced Proton’s own sales, so its forecast market share has shrunk slightly to 18.1% in October and 18.9% for the year to date. Speaking of YTD figures, the company said it has sold 125,557 units so far in 2024, which is still lower than last year’s 129,604 units, although the gap has narrowed slightly to 3.1% from 3.5% in September. Its sights are set on a sixth consecutive year of growth, and there’s still time for it surpass its 2023 total, but not much.
As expected, the Saga continues to lead the lineup with a healthy 6,112 units sold, contributing to a YTD total of 60,178 units and making it Malaysia’s third best-selling vehicle of 2024. Total sales are expected to hit 72,000 units this year, which would make it the second successive time the sedan surpasses 70,000 units sold over 12 months.
Three other models led their respective segments, with the X50 remaining the best-selling B-segment SUV with sales reaching 2,122 units last month. The S70 also regained its C-segment sedan (disputed) crown with 1,432 units sold, resulting in 16,200 in overall sales since deliveries began early this year; visibility will be boosted ..

JPJ recalls – 2024 Perodua Alza, 2,518 units and Aruz, 1,139 units; Honda CB350RS motorcycle, 65 units

The road transport department (JPJ) has issued another list of product recalls from a couple of automotive brands in Malaysia, and the latest notice involves two vehicle models from Perodua as well as from motorcycle brand Honda.
The following are the make and model of affected vehicles, as published by the JPJ:
Perodua Alza 1.5 X, 1.5 H and 1.5 AV (2024) – 2,518 unitsPerodua Aruz 1.5 X and 1.5 AV (2024) – 1,139 unitsHonda CB350RS (2024) – 65 unitsThe department said the recall involving the second-generation Alza as well as for the Aruz has been made to rectify the height of the light throw from the headlamps, which do not comply with specifications.

As for the CB350RS, which was launched in Malaysia in June, the recall is being issued for faulty speed sensora, which may cause incorrect speedometer readings as well as incorrect operation of the ABS and traction control. A similar recall notice was issued over this matter in India back in September.
The department added that all vehicle owners affected by the recalls will be contacted by the manufacturers for checks and rectification to be carried out, at no cost to owners.

Proton R3 announces drivers for 2024 Sepang 1000KM – Syafiq Ali, Fahrizal Hasan, Ariff Azmi, Alister Yoong

At the official unveiling of the Proton S70 R3 race car that will be entered into the 2024 Sepang 1000KM endurance race, the national carmaker has also announced its driver line-up for the event that will be taking place at the Petronas Sepang International Circuit next month.
Two cars will be entered into this year’s running of S1K following the national carmaker’s five-year break from the annual endurance race, off the back of its third consecutive win in 2019 and its sixth overall since its victory with the Satria Neo in 2012.
A mix of experience and youth has been enlisted for Proton R3’s driver at the Sepang 1000KM, with three-time S1K winner Syafiq Ali paired with multiple winner at the Sepang 12 Hours, Fahrizal Hasan to drive the #81 Proton S70 R3.
The accompanying #82 car will be driven by younger but no less formidable talent. This pairing is comprised of 18-year-old Ariff Azmi who has tasted success in karting as well as touring cars, with the 2019 Rotax Malaysia and Rotax Asia titles to his name, as well as being the Toyota Gazoo Racing Malaysia rookie-class champion and the MSF Merdeka Enduro 88 champion in 2023.

Paired with Ariff Azmi in the #82 car is 21-year-old Alister Yoong, son of Malaysia’s only Formula 1 driver so far, Alex Yoong, and a successful racer in his own right. Yoong packs several race wins from the FIA Formula 4 series, along with a top-10 finish for Team Malaysia in the 2022 Motorsports Games.

Proton R3 plans to build S70 race car for MCS SP2 class with production 1.5L turbo three-cylinder engine

With the official unveiling of the Proton S70 R3 race car that will be entered into the upcoming 2024 Sepang 1000KM race next month, the national carmaker’s latest motorsport entry has been confirmed to use the 1.6 litre, naturally aspirated S4PH Campro engine, instead of the turbocharged 1.5L three-cylinder engine as found in the roadgoing car for general sale.
The choice of engine was due to regulations for the S1K event, specifically for the MTC category that the S70 R3 will be entered into, which stipulates that the cars entered are to have a maximum displacement of 1,600 cc without forced induction.
Proton hasn’t closed the door on racing a derivative of the S70 race car with the production 1.5 litre turbocharged engine, however, and one possible avenue is the Stock Production 2 (SP2) category of the Malaysia Championship Series (MCS), according to Proton R3 chief mechanic Haji Osman Jailani.
As its name suggests, the Stock Production 2 (SP2) category is a class of racing for cars which are of nearly factory standard specification, using the production car’s engine. It is the SP2 category that Proton R3 will be paying particular attention upon, as MCS organiser Sepang International Circuit will be revising the SP2 category, said Haji Osman.

At present, the SP2 category is for production cars using a naturally aspirated engine displacing between 1.5 litres and 1.6 litres, with a balance of performance (BoP) system used to ensure that all competing machines ..
