MITI will assist Perodua to build Malaysia’s first under-RM100k EV, to be ready by end-2025 – Tengku Zafrul

Perodua ‘MyEV’ rendered based on the 2023 EMO ConceptThe ministry of investment, trade and industry (MITI) says it will help Perodua achieve its aim of producing Malaysia’s first electric vehicle (EV) priced under RM100,000 by the end of 2025. According to MITI minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz, the reason why the government wanted to assist and facilitate Perodua is because “we want to make EVs affordable,” The Edge reports.
He said the ministry is optimistic that the national automaker will reach its target of mass producing the EV by the end of next year, in time to meet the lifting of price cap protection measures. “Perodua has been in discussion with MITI, and we are optimistic about its plan of achieving the target by the end of 2025,” he said.
While reiterating what he said earlier this year regarding the timeframe for deployment, Zafrul did not provide details on how far development has progressed on the project. As yet, very little is known about P2’s electrification programme beyond that offered via its Electric Motion Online (EMO) scale model and emo-1 proof-of-concept prototype that was shown in May this year.
The emo-1 concept, based on the current D51A Myvi, provides an insight into what the EV could be like. It’s powered by a single front motor that produces 68 PS (50 kW) and 220 Nm of torque, getting the car from zero to 100 km/h in around seven to nine seconds.

Having covered Negeri Sembilan, Melaka, Johor, Perak, Penang, Kedah and Perlis, the Proton eMas 7 Tour is now heading for the east coast states of Pahang, Terengganu and Kelantan. The aim is to cover a total of 2,000 km across Malaysia, showcasing the technology and talents of Proton’s first EV along the way.
Interestingly, the latest batch of shots posted on Proton e.MAS Cars’ Facebook show a new livery prominently featuring the Petronas Twin Towers on the front doors (previously it was ‘Hello’ in various languages), plus 19-inch wheels as opposed to 18s previously.
Proton says the eMas 7 Tour provides its engineers with the opportunity to further tune and refine the SUV’s ride and handling amidst Malaysian weather and road conditions. Throughout, the tour stops at charging stations, popular food spots and eMas dealerships, while a travelling host engages the public.
Once done with the east coast states, the Proton eMas 7 Tour will return to the Klang Valley where you’ll be able to see the car at the paultan.org ACE 2024 over the October 26-27 weekend at Setia City Convention Centre. A separate post Instagram story posted to the same account also revealed that the audio system in the eMas 7 will be a 16-speaker Wanos system from Flyme Sound, and the premium audio system is claimed to offer ‘crystal clear sound’. The use of Flyme-branded equipment lines up with the Flyme Auto infotainment system that is used in the China-market Galaxy E5, and this has been supplied by Geely group smartphone maker Meizu, which has been designed to be as intuitive to use as a smartphone, Geely said of the interface.
