MCE secures RM52m electronics contract from Proton

MCE Holdings has announced that its wholly-owned subsidiary, Multi-Code Electronics Industries, has secured contracts from Proton with an approximate value of RM52.13 million to supply automotive electronic and mechatronic components.
The project, which spans 60 months, will see MCE provide parts such as the front reading lamp, rear reflector and pull cup handle assembly for Proton vehicles, starting in the first quarter of the financial year ending July 31, 2026. The Proton model (or models) were not disclosed.
“Securing another project from Proton reflects the trust it places in our design and manufacturing expertise. Winning this project through a competitive tender process against prominent local and regional contenders demonstrates that MCE meets the high standards set by leading automakers for quality and cost-efficient technology solutions,” said MCE group MD Goh Kar Chun.

“As we continue to enhance our offerings in the automotive electronics manufacturing value chain, we are on track to complete our new plant, the MCE Auto Hub, by early 2025. This facility will further boost our capabilities in designing and developing more sophisticated electronic components and systems, enabling us to meet the growing demand for next-generation vehicles locally and internationally,” he added.
According to the Bursa Malaysia-listed company’s profile, it is engaged in the engineering, design and manufacturing of automotive electronics and mechatronic pa..

Proton eMas 5 EV rendered, Geometry Xingyuan base – BYD Dolphin rival with up to 116 PS, 410 km range

With the Proton eMas 7 now revealed – albeit still in camouflaged guise – attention now turns to other models in the eMas (stylised as e.MAS) stable. Last month, Proton released a teaser for its electrified lineup in the run up to the eMas 7’s debut, showing not just the SUV but also an S70-based sedan (likely a hybrid version) and a mystery hatchback/small SUV.
At the time, we speculated that the latter was a new EV based on the yet-to-be-revealed Geometry Xingyuan (also rumoured to be called Paipai or Totoro), which had appeared on China’s ministry of industry and information technology (MIIT) website just a couple of weeks before. We’ve had past form here, as we correctly guessed that the Geely Galaxy E5 would become a Proton when its MIIT photos leaked.
Now, Photoshop wizard Theophilus Chin has offered us renderings of what an eMas 5 based on the Xingyuan will look like. The car is as was shown in those MIIT images, sporting the same rounded, slightly smart-esque design – in fact, Chin used press and marketing photos of the smart #3 to make the renders you see here.

At the front, you’ll find teardrop-shaped headlights (mirrored by the taillights), a slim lower air intake and vertical chrome-trimmed inlets. Also visible are the gamepad-style two-tone wheels and a C-pillar cutout reminiscent of the aforementioned smart cars, giving the presumed eMas 5 a “floating roof” look. Of course, one can also spot the eMas-specific front badge and the Proton s..

Tun Dr Mahathir drives a Proton S70 with unique specs, custom made for the 99-year old ‘car guy’?

Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad is surely the oldest practicing car guy in Malaysia? The fourth and seventh prime minister’s love for automobiles and driving himself is well documented, and he’s still doing it today, at 99 years old. Yes, the man will be a century old next year and he’s still sharp. Here, the ‘father of Proton’ is pictured driving the marque’s latest sedan, the S70.
What also caught our eye is the spec of this S70, which doesn’t match any of the four variants available in showrooms – Executive, Premium, Flagship and Flagship X. Based on the leatherette upholstery, 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system and analogue meter panel, this ought to be the Premium.
However, the car also comes with a sunroof, which is exclusive to the Flagship X. The range-topping X is basically the Flagship with the addition of a sunroof and front dashcam. Is this a one-of-a-kind S70 custom made for Tun? Not surprising, as the statesman is the founder of Proton and was the carmaker’s chairman until 2016.

Flagship cabin on the left, smaller screen/analogue meter of the Premium on the rightLaunched in November last year, the S70 is based on the Geely Emgrand, which shares the X50’s BMA platform. It’s a touch larger than the B-segment Honda City, but Proton calls the S70 a C-segment sedan and has given it a 1.5-litre turbo engine.
That’s the 1.5-litre port-injected three-cylinder engine that powers the X50 Standard to Premium (not the 177 PS/255 Nm 1.5L TGDi unit in the X5..

Proton eMas 7 EV spotted testing on-road in Malaysia

Two weeks on from its preview, the Proton eMas 7 has been sighted running tests on public roads in Malaysia, with the national carmaker’s upcoming first EV spotted on the Karak Highway by X/Twitter user Gandum_Wing via the handle @Avionalytics.
Separately, the eMas 7 was also sighted by Azlan Mahmud, as shared on the Malaysian Electric Vehicle Owners Club Facebook page. So far, we know that the eMas 7 is closely related to the Geely Galaxy E5 that made its debut in China in May this year, and that the E5 was designed from the outset with left- and right-hand drive markets in mind to be a global model.
Going by the specifications of the Galaxy E5 that the eMas 7 EV is based on, Proton’s upcoming EV is underpinned by the Global Intelligent New Energy Architecture (GEA) with cell-to-body (CTB) construction, where its battery pack – comprised of Aegis ‘short blade’ cells – forms part of its structure, and contributes to its torsional rigidity of 31,000 Nm per degree.
With the E5 as its base, the eMas 7 will be of a front-wheel-drive layout with its front-mounted motor that outputs 218 PS and 320 Nm of torque, and the Geely equivalent is rated for a 0-100 km/h time of 6.9 seconds and a top speed of 180 km/h. In Galaxy E5 form, the EV gets two battery specifications: a 49.52 kWh pack that offers up to 440 km of range, and a larger, 60.22 kWh pack that yields up to 530 km of range.
In terms of physical size, the eMas 7 measures 4,615 mm long, 1,901 mm wide, 1,670 mm t..

2025 Proton X70 facelift walk-around video – new face, same price; from below RM90k with early bird offer

The 2025 Proton X70 facelift was officially launched yesterday, and the big news is that prices are identical to before despite Proton claiming that it’s offering more/improved kit worth a combined RM13,700.
That means that the refreshed C-segment SUV starts from RM98,800 for the Standard, while the mid-spec Executive goes for RM110,800. The top-spec Premium is RM123,800 and if you want a panoramic glass roof, the Premium X is yours for RM126,800, all on-the-road without insurance.
The early bird package is for the first 3,000 customers, and the carrot is quite a juicy one. A RM7,000 cash rebate for all variants brings the entry price to just RM91,800. Proton is also offering trade-in support of RM2,800 for Proton cars and RM2,000 for other makes – this lowers the price to below the RM90k mark. There’s also a Proton Insurance Programme upgrade.

So, what do you get for the money? The X70 has been on our roads for over five and a half years (since December 2018) with the same looks, so a facelift is much welcomed. Thankfully, this is a pretty big one that no one would be mistaking for the pre-facelift. New aesthetic bits include the grille, headlamps, bumpers (front and back), front fenders and bonnet. New 18- and 19-inch wheels too.
Inside, the most obvious change is a new dashboard decor panel, a gloss black insert that incorporates 72-colour ambient lighting with a ‘rhythmic’ function. Next to it is a larger ‘floating’ 12.3-inch infota..
