Proton has announced that it sold 12,522 units (domestic and export) in the month of May 2024, which represents a 13.6% increase from April 2024. Compared to the same month last year (May 2023), the latest figure is slightly lower by about 6.4%.
According to the carmaker, total sales for the first five months of this year currently stands at 62,697 units, which is not too far from the 62,970 units recorded in the same period last year. With this, Proton estimates its current market share to be at 19%.
The company also noted in its release that it exported 509 units in May, the highest shipment recorded for 2024 so far. This was made possible by its plans to expand and reestablish its presence in countries such as Trinidad and Tobago, Bangladesh and Iraq this year.
In terms of model-specific numbers, the Saga continues to be the brand’s most popular offering with 6,119 units sold last month for a year-to-date (YTD) total of 29,397 units. Coming in second place is the S70 with 2,011 units (9,474 units YTD) to secure the top spot for C-segment sedans in Malaysia. Rounding off the podium is the Persona with 1,645 units (8,444 units YTD).
Meanwhile, Proton’s fourth best-selling model last month was the X50 with 1,407 units (8,493 units YTD), which is followed by the X70 with 523 units (2,495 units YTD) and Iriz with 452 units (2,410 units YTD). The X90 regained its position as the most popular D-segment SUV in the country last month with 364 units sold (1,741 units ..

In the automotive industry, keeping manufacturing costs as low as possible is paramount, as the higher the cost, the less competitive one becomes. How a market thrives – or doesn’t – is largely determined by its ability to secure or produce elements in the supply chain, be it in the form of components or materials needed for production, in cost-effective terms.
In this regard, Malaysia is lagging behind, and that’s an important factor curbing its growth. That’s the opinion expressed by Geely chairman Li Shufu, who said the competitiveness of Malaysia’s automotive industry is being restricted by its automotive supply chain costs, which is about 30% higher than China’s and more than 10% higher than Thailand’s.
In an interview on state-owned CCTV programme “Dialogue,” which was picked up by Chinese tech website CNMO, Li said that the fundamental reason for the high cost of Malaysia’s automotive supply chain lies in the lack of competitiveness of local parts.
He said that Malaysia’s automotive parts supply still relies heavily on overseas imports, and that the relatively small size of the local automotive market meant it was difficult to get enough scale to keep costs down.
Having realised the seriousness of the matter, Li said that that one of Geely’s current priorities is to help improve the competitiveness of the country’s automotive industry’s supply chain. He stressed that Geely will promote the locali..

Perodua is offering a trade-in deal on the Aruz this month, where customers who purchase the seven-seater SUV on trade-in will enjoy a RM2,500 cash rebate from the model’s original price.
In addition to the trade-in offer, Perodua is also offering customers two years of vehicle servicing, free of charge when purchasing the Aruz. The promotion is ongoing this month, until June 30, 2024. Regular pricing for the Perodua Aruz continues to be at RM72,900 for the 1.5 X variant, and at RM77,900 for the 1.5 AV; both prices are on-the-road without insurance.
Updated in 2021, the Aruz was launched in 2019 and marked the national brand’s return to the SUV segment, after the Nautica and Kembara.
Key componentry for the Aruz remains as it has been from debut, namely with a 2NR-VE 1.5 litre naturally-aspirated four-cylinder engine producing 101 hp and 131 Nm, driving the rear wheels through a four-speed automatic transmission.
Both variants are outfitted with 17-inch alloy wheels, LED headlamps, LED taillights, keyless entry and engine start, a built-in toll reader, manual air-conditioning with digital controls and rear vents, a seven-inch touchscreen infotainment system, six speaker-audio, six airbags, ABS, EBD, brake assist, VSC, traction control, hill start assist, a reverse camera as well as solar and security window film.

The model year 2024 Proton X50 has an unchanged exteriorEarlier today, Proton unveiled the 2024 model year X50 a.k.a. X50 RC. RC stands for Running Change, which means that this is not a facelift, and those who were expecting to see a refreshed face, or even wheels/colours, were left disappointed.
It’s now almost four years since the B-segment SUV debut in 2020, but Proton has seen fit to soldier on with the X50’s original look, choosing to focus instead on improvements to NVH and the infotainment system, which we’ve detailed in full here along with the extra equipment. So, what’s behind the call to not alter the design, even by just a bit?
“We have plans to change the physical, but after we assessed the design, whatever that Geely has, it’s not suitable for the Malaysian market because it’s too aggressive. This model is sexy, if we change it won’t be sexy, it will be ugly,” Proton deputy CEO Roslan Abdullah told paultan.org, adding that the ‘internal work’ had progressed and waiting for a suitable new skin would be ‘too late’.
The 2021 Geely Binyue Pro’s face was deemed to be too aggressive for Malaysia“It’s a waste (sayang) that the upgraded one at Geely is too aggressive, which I don’t think the customers will continue buying,” he reiterated. The face that is deemed to be too much for Malaysia is the mug of the 2021 Geely Binyue Pro – take a look at it and share your thoughts.

A lot of you will have been waiting with bated breath for Proton to add the long-overdue Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality to its models. Some will have even bought cars recently with the expectation that these features will be added through an over-the-air (OTA) update. Well, sorry to burst your bubble, but the latter has been emphatically ruled out.
That’s right, Proton has confirmed that existing cars – including the X90, S70 and even the just-launched 2024 X50 RC – will not receive Apple CarPlay nor Android Auto, not even OTA as the company previously indicated. This was intimated to paultan.org by deputy CEO Roslan Abdullah and head of group engineering and technical Haizam Ghazali during the X50 launch event.
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto will likely only be added to the X70 faceliftInstead, the two leading smartphone connectivity services will only be introduced through new model launches, including the forthcoming facelifted X70 and possibly 2025 model year updates for the X90 and S70. This means that existing customers – some of which will have based at least some of their purchasing decisions on that elusive OTA update – will be left out in the cold.
There is light at the end of the tunnel, however – Roslan told us that Proton is in the final stages of getting licence approval from Apple, so expect the very next launch, the facelifted X70, to have CarPlay and Android Auto support.

Almost four years on from the model’s original debut in 2020 and with more than 110,000 units sold across 12 right-hand-drive markets, the Proton X50 arrives for the 2024 model-year as the X50 RC, or short for Running Change.
Proton’s updated B-segment SUV is offered in the same Standard, Executive, Premium and Flagship variants, priced at RM86,300, RM93,300, RM101,800 and RM113,300, respectively, on-the-road without insurance. These are unchanged from current pricing for the X50.
As you’ll see in these images, the exterior is essentially carried over from the outgoing model. Proton makes it clear that this not a facelift, and that a more significant refresh that’s based on the Geely Binyue Cool will arrive later on in the X50’s life cycle.
Key powertrain specifications for the 2024 X50 remain unchanged, carrying over the 1.5 litre turbocharged inline-three cylinder petrol engine.
The Standard, Executive and Premium use the port-injection version with 150 PS and 226 Nm of torque, while the Flagship retains the direct injection TGDi unit with 177 PS and 255 Nm. All variants are mated with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox sending drive to the front wheels.
