Proton has recorded sales of 11,269 units including exports in the month of September 2024 bringing a year-to-date total of 112,758 units, having breached the 100,000-unit mark for the sixth year running for the preceding month of August 2024.
This is slightly down on the 12,690 units sold in August as the total market volume had shrunk by 22.2%, though the national car company continues to retain second place in the national vehicle sales rankings with a forecast market share of 20.1% for the month, and a year-to-date figure of 19.1% for the full year of 2024.
Total industry volume (TIV) for the Malaysian automotive market is estimated to have dropped to 56,067 units, or by 22.2% from the previous month; September has historically been a slow month for vehicle sales, said Proton. However, the estimated year-to-date total remains ahead of 2023, with a total volume of just under 590,000 units representing a 3% gain over last year, according to the carmaker.
The month of September 2024 saw the Proton X50, X70 and X90 take the volume lead in their respective B-SUV, C-SUV and D-SUV segments. The X50 sold 1,771 units last month (17,000 YTD), the X70 facelift sold 1,466 units (5,482 units YTD), and the X90 sold 217 units (2,724 units YTD).
For comparison with September 2023 figures, the X50 sold 2,210 units (24,960 units YTD 2023), the X70 sold 779 units (8,778 units YTD 2023), and the X90 sold 491 units (3,435 units YTD 2023). The carmaker’s September 2024 YTD sales volume is down 3%, compared to 116,832 units the same month last year.
The S70 is the second-best-selling C-segment sedan with 1,013 units sold and 14,768 units YTD, closing in on one full year since it was launched in November 2023.
Proton’s best-seller continues to be the Saga, with 5,162 units sold last month (54,006 units YTD), making it the second-best-selling A-segment sedan in the country. Its B-segment sedan stablemate the Persona sold 1,295 units last month (14,411 units YTD), while the Iriz recorded sales of 345 units (4,064 units YTD).
“With two newly refreshed SUV models, and a new sedan in its first full year of sales, Proton is confident it has the necessary products to push sales volumes higher in the next three months. This will be boosted by our promotional activities and soon, we will launch a nationwide campaign to reward our customers with lucrative gifts and prizes,” said Proton Edar CEO Roslan Abdullah.
“At the same time, our efforts to deliver a premium brand experience at outlets and improve after sales service will continue before culminating with the launch of our first EV offering in December,” Roslan added.
