Also unveiled at the Kuala Lumpur International Mobility Show (KLIMS) is the Proton X50 Sport Edition. As the name suggests, this variant gives the B-segment SUV a racier look, with a bodykit leading the changes.
The kit, which consists of a front splitter, side skirts and rear spats, is different from the R3-designed version seen before, here finished in red. It joins a stealthy aesthetic afforded by new black paint and a gloss black finish for the grille surround and tailgate garnish (previously satin chrome), as well as a red stripe along the car’s shoulder line.
Also fitted are new 18-inch ten-spoke gloss black alloy wheels, fitted to a lower-spec variant of the original Geely Binyue (the X50 usually gets the top-spec two-tone rollers on the Premium and Flagship variants). Finishing off the look is a chrome Sport Edition badge on the tailgate, with the car also gaining door sill scuff plates and a Qi wireless charger.
The Sport Edition is based on the upper-mid-spec Premium model, meaning it uses the port-injected 1.5 litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine, producing 150 PS and 226 Nm of torque, mated to a seven-speed wet dual-clutch transmission. It also means the car loses out on the Flagship’s driver assistance features such as autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control and lane centring assist.
Proton has yet to reveal if the car will have a limited run, nor has it provided the price. It has confirmed, however, that the Sport Edition will be sold to the general public at a later date. Expect the car to carry a slight premium over the, um, Premium’s RM101,800 sticker price.
