Proton R3 announces drivers for 2024 Sepang 1000KM – Syafiq Ali, Fahrizal Hasan, Ariff Azmi, Alister Yoong

At the official unveiling of the Proton S70 R3 race car that will be entered into the 2024 Sepang 1000KM endurance race, the national carmaker has also announced its driver line-up for the event that will be taking place at the Petronas Sepang International Circuit next month.
Two cars will be entered into this year’s running of S1K following the national carmaker’s five-year break from the annual endurance race, off the back of its third consecutive win in 2019 and its sixth overall since its victory with the Satria Neo in 2012.
A mix of experience and youth has been enlisted for Proton R3’s driver at the Sepang 1000KM, with three-time S1K winner Syafiq Ali paired with multiple winner at the Sepang 12 Hours, Fahrizal Hasan to drive the #81 Proton S70 R3.
The accompanying #82 car will be driven by younger but no less formidable talent. This pairing is comprised of 18-year-old Ariff Azmi who has tasted success in karting as well as touring cars, with the 2019 Rotax Malaysia and Rotax Asia titles to his name, as well as being the Toyota Gazoo Racing Malaysia rookie-class champion and the MSF Merdeka Enduro 88 champion in 2023.

Paired with Ariff Azmi in the #82 car is 21-year-old Alister Yoong, son of Malaysia’s only Formula 1 driver so far, Alex Yoong, and a successful racer in his own right. Yoong packs several race wins from the FIA Formula 4 series, along with a top-10 finish for Team Malaysia in the 2022 Motorsports Games.

Proton R3 plans to build S70 race car for MCS SP2 class with production 1.5L turbo three-cylinder engine

With the official unveiling of the Proton S70 R3 race car that will be entered into the upcoming 2024 Sepang 1000KM race next month, the national carmaker’s latest motorsport entry has been confirmed to use the 1.6 litre, naturally aspirated S4PH Campro engine, instead of the turbocharged 1.5L three-cylinder engine as found in the roadgoing car for general sale.
The choice of engine was due to regulations for the S1K event, specifically for the MTC category that the S70 R3 will be entered into, which stipulates that the cars entered are to have a maximum displacement of 1,600 cc without forced induction.
Proton hasn’t closed the door on racing a derivative of the S70 race car with the production 1.5 litre turbocharged engine, however, and one possible avenue is the Stock Production 2 (SP2) category of the Malaysia Championship Series (MCS), according to Proton R3 chief mechanic Haji Osman Jailani.
As its name suggests, the Stock Production 2 (SP2) category is a class of racing for cars which are of nearly factory standard specification, using the production car’s engine. It is the SP2 category that Proton R3 will be paying particular attention upon, as MCS organiser Sepang International Circuit will be revising the SP2 category, said Haji Osman.

At present, the SP2 category is for production cars using a naturally aspirated engine displacing between 1.5 litres and 1.6 litres, with a balance of performance (BoP) system used to ensure that all competing machines ..

Proton S70 R3 race car unveiled ahead of 2024 Sepang 1000KM; confirmed to use 1.6L NA Campro engine

Proton motorsport division, Proton R3 has officially unveiled the S70 R3 race car that it will field in the upcoming Sepang 1000KM race that is taking place next month at the Petronas Sepang International Circuit, as well as its line-up of drivers it has enlisted for the race.
The national carmaker’s motorsport division confirms what our ears have heard in prior teaser content Proton has released with regard to its S70 R3 racer, which is that the car does indeed house the 1.6 litre naturally aspirated, inline-four cylinder S4PH engine, and not the turbocharged, 1.5 litre inline-three cylinder engine as featured in the roadgoing S70 that is available for general sale.
The reason for using the naturally aspirated Campro engine is a straightforward one – technical regulations of the MTC category that Proton is entering in the Sepang 1000KM with the S70 R3, stipulates the use of a naturally aspirated engine with a maximum capacity of 1,600 cc. Therefore, the use of forced induction engines – such as the setup in the regular production S70 – is not allowed.

The decision to use the 1.6L Campro engine instead of converting the 1.5L three-pot for natural aspiration is because that engine was designed to work with forced induction, and to make it work as a naturally aspirated engine would require significant redevelopment.
In addition, the technical ruleset for the MTC category allows the use of engines from the same manufacturer, and using the existing 1...

Proton eMas 7 interior is full black in Malaysia – white seats seen in showrooms are early prototypes of EV

Click to enlargeThe Proton eMas 7 – which is now open for booking at an estimated price of from RM120,000 – made an appearance at ACE 2024 over the weekend with an open interior, and we saw a modern and premium-feel cabin decked out in Indigo Blue. Yes, officially, the name of the interior colour is Indigo Blue, although it looks black. We’ll take it as black.
But there are pictures of an eMas 7 at showrooms circulating, showing white leather seats and a white cockpit with a dark top – see the images above. We’ve enquired with Proton and can confirm that the Malaysian-market EV will be offered solely with a black interior, and the example with the white cabin is an early prototype.
In any case, even if the white cabin is available as an option, there will only be a small minority going for it – based on trend, unlike other markets, Malaysians are very conservative and practical when it comes to interior colours, with boring black always preferred over lighter tones. Senang kotor, as they say.

The eMas 7 will have five exterior colour options and one interior shadeAs for exterior colours, the five options span from floral to dark – choose from Quartz Rose, Turquoise Green, Platinum Silver, Lithium White and Slate Grey.
Two variants were announced at ACE 2024 – Prime and Premium. The base Prime comes with a 49.52 kWh battery that’s good for 345 km of WLTP range (it’s good that Proton uses WLTP in its materials, the super optimi..

Proton eMas 7 – Prime vs Premium variants compared; from RM120k estimated, up to 410 km WLTP EV range

Proton, through its Pro-Net EV division, recently opened the order books for the eMas 7 (stylised as e.MAS 7), which is estimated to start from RM120,000. Expected to be launched sometime in December (likely coinciding with KLIMS 2024), the brand’s first EV will be offered in two variants called the Prime and Premium.
If you’re not sure which one to get, we’re here to help. In this post, we’re comparing both variants so you know what you’re getting with each. Before getting into the difference, let’s first focus on what is the same for all versions of the eMas 7 that are set to go on sale.
First up, both variants share the same electric motor at the front that is rated at 218 PS (215 hp or 160 kW) and 320 Nm of torque. This is good for a 0-100 km/h time of 6.9 seconds and a top speed of 175 km/h.

As for equipment, the eMas 7 comes standard with automatic LED headlamps, active high beam control, pop-out door handles, roof rails, rain-sensing wipers, powered side mirrors (with heating function), a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster, 15.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a multi-function steering wheel.
The list continues with leatherette upholstery, a six-way powered driver’s seat, keyless entry and start, walk away auto lock, a wireless phone charging pad as well as single-zone climate control with N95 filter and rear vents.
On the safety and driver assistance front, there are six airbags (front, side, curtain), brake auto hold, a..
