Earlier this month, Proton presented 20 units of its Proton X90 Flagship to the 17th World Chinese Entrepreneurs Convention (WCEC) for use as chauffeur vehicles. The D-segment SUV was used to transport foreign dignitaries, top management and members from various businesses during the event, which was held from September 9-11 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Center (KLCC).
The loaned vehicles helped ensure those attending the event, which was organised by the Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia (ACCCIM), travelled in comfort to meetings and appointments. Passengers provided positive reviews, stating they were impressed with the SUV’s comfort and space.
After the conclusion of the WCEC, the X90 was also used to ferry entourages led by Cheng Hong, VP of the China Overseas Chinese Association and Wang Yanfei, vice-chairman of the Standing Committee of the Sichuan Provincial People’s Congress, to Melaka, where they visited some tourist sites.

“By providing 20 units of Proton X90 to this event, we are showcasing our commitment to excellence and fostering stronger economic ties across borders. This initiative represents our dedication to building a collaborative future and strengthening global partnerships in the automotive industry,” said Proton CEO Li Chunrong.

Proton has collaborated with the ministry of entrepreneur and cooperatives development (MECD), the Malaysia Automotive, Robotics and IoT Institute (MARii) and Malaysian Industrial Development Finance Berhad (MIDF) to bring suppliers of government-linked companies as well as Proton to attend the Market Access, Technology Transfer and Vendor Enhancement Program in China, Proton said in a statement.
This programme was conducted in early July this year to accelerate the development of next-generation vehicles, including battery-electric vehicles through strategic partnerships and exchange of technology, according to the statement by the national carmaker.
In the programme, representatives from MBSB Bank, Tenaga Nasional, PLUS Expressways, UEM Edgenta, Telekom Malaysia as well as 22 Malaysian vendors were brought to visit EV component plants, such as plants for chargers and charging stations, batteries and charger producers across seven locations in China including Shanghai, Nanjing and Hangzhou.
The tour visited Geely subsidiaries including EV maker Zeekr and EV battery and charger producer VREMT in Hangzhou Bay. Earlier this year in April, Proton opened its new research and development centre in Hangzhou Bay, China, and the new facility is located within the Geely Automobile Research Institute. This will complement Proton’s existing R&D facilities in Malaysia.

Proton is taking great pains to stress that its forthcoming eMas 7 (stylised as the e.MAS 7) is not a mere rebadge of its Geely Galaxy E5/EX5 twin, highlighting the significant amount of local input. The national carmaker has detailed the local testing regime for its first EV ahead of its launch at the end of the year.
The company sent six prototypes of the SUV (perhaps you’ve seen them before) across Peninsular Malaysia to ensure the car can withstand local road and climate conditions, as well as making sure its durability and adaptability suits market tastes.
A total of four road tests have been planned, including Durability Adaptive Testing (DAT), Electrical Road Testing (ERT), Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) road test and a Quality Reliability Test (QRT). Proton is also tweaking the eMas 7’s infotainment system, built-in navigation and telematic services.

So far, Proton’s engineers have subjected the car to DAT – simulating Malaysian’s environment and traffic – as well as updating the navigation system mapping, optimising radio station frequency capture, and testing internet connectivity on rural and mountainous roads and at train stations. The company said it has also tested the ADAS systems at various places, including shopping mall carparks, road forks and elevated roads.

Proton has announced that the Saga will be locally assembled (CKD) in Egypt by Ezz Elsewedy Automotive Factories (ESAF), which formed a partnership with local distributor Ezz Elarab last November. With investments amounting to over USD15 million (about RM65 million), the CKD project is said to have a production capacity reaching 50,000 units in the coming years.
Today’s announcement also saw the first 120 CKD packs of the Saga being shipped to Egypt, a left-hand drive market that welcomed Proton cars again November 2018. Currently, only the Saga is sold in Egypt, with three variants of the facelifted sedan offered there since December 2020 – the cars were previously fully imported (CBU) from Malaysia.
The start of CKD operations in Egypt will allow Proton to leverage on the country as a regional hub for producing cars to be sold in Middle Eastern North Africa (MENA) region, which is something that was mulled for quite some time.
The project is also in line with Egypt’s Automotive Industry Development Programme (AIDP) launched last November, which aims to promote CKD assembly while severely cutting down on CBU imports.
Proton now has five overseas CKD projects under its belt, including in Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Kenya and Egypt. The company aims to grow its export quantity to 10,000 units in the coming years. As promised, the Proton eMas 7 (stylised as e.MAS 7) made its public debut during the National Day parade on Saturday, August 31 as part of a 25-car contingent. The presence of the national carmaker’s first electric vehicle, first previewed to the media early last month, gave those present a good first look at the car ahead of its launch at the end of the year.
The eMas 7’s design, shared with its Geely Galaxy E5 twin, was covered by a specially-designed camouflage bearing the colours of the Jalur Gemilang, as well as various greetings from around the world – again hinting at Proton’s possible global aspirations.

Proton has launched the 2025 Proton X70 facelift in East Malaysia, two weeks after the C-segment SUV’s debut in the west. Prices in Sabah and Sarawak are RM2,000 higher than the RRP in Peninsular Malaysia, which means it’s RM100,800 for the Standard, RM112,800 for the Executive, RM125,800 for the Premium and RM128,800 for the Premium X, on-the-road without insurance.
“We are thrilled to introduce the 2025 Proton X70 to East Malaysia, an important region with opportunities to enhance market shares. This ceremony is more than just about unveiling a new vehicle; it is about reinforcing our commitment to East Malaysia,” said Proton CEO Li Chunrong.
“The unique needs of buyers here and their strong connection to the brand have always driven us to deliver the best products and services. With its updated features and refined styling, we are hopeful the 2025 Proton X70 will drive Proton to the head of the premium SUV market in East Malaysia,” he added.

Proton says that it is offering up to RM23,500 worth of added value at no extra cost for the first 3,000 customers of the X70 facelift. This includes the RM13,700 of value from the new/improved equipment list, a RM7,000 cash rebate (for all variants), trade in support of up to RM2,800 (non-Proton vehicles get RM2,000) and a Proton Insurance Programme upgrade.
