Proton Atlas OS – next-gen will get BM, Mandarin, Cantonese voice control; EV features; YouTube app

Proton’s infotainment system supplier ACO Tech has previewed the next-generation version of its Atlas operating system during its fifth-anniversary celebrations yesterday. The revamped software will be offered with a slew of new features, including several that will be specific to electric vehicles.
Visually, the new Atlas OS will be differentiated through a more minimalist user interface, now with drag-and-drop customisation for the widgets. More importantly, the “Hi Proton” voice control, hitherto only available in English, will soon support Bahasa Malaysia, Mandarin and even Cantonese.
Also added is an enhanced built-in navigation system with more accurate route calculation, a Waze-style map report feature for adding traffic, accident, police, speed camera and road hazard information, and AI-assisted trip planning with toll cost estimation.

The company said it is also working on numerous other features for EVs. A built-in application will provide users with one-touch access to locate the nearest charging stations, pay for charging and plan routes with charging stops included – something you can already do in the smart #1 and #3. This is important given Proton is working on its own EVs, such as the eMas 7 (stylised as e.MAS 7) that will be launched in December.
Video apps are also making their way to Atlas, including YouTube, MYTV Mana-Mana and even TikTok – presumably only functional when the vehicle is stationary. Users will also eventually ..

Proton launches new regional parts centre in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah – 30% reduction in parts lead time

Proton has launched a new regional parts centre (RPC) at Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, which it says will reduce lead time for parts delivery by 30% to meet growing demand in its third highest state for vehicle sales in Malaysia. The carmaker also has another RPC to support customers in East Malaysia located in Kuching, Sarawak – this was launched last year.
The new RPC is located in a commercial area in Inanam and boasts a built-up floor space of approximately 28,000 square feet, which is 2.5 times bigger than the previous location. It can receive up to six containers of parts on site simultaneously, up from two containers previously, and is currently processing an average of 26 containers per month to fully utilise its capability to store up to three months of stock.
“With growing customer demand over the past few years, Proton’s previous warehouse facilities in Sabah were overflowing with parts and running inefficiently due to a lack of space. The opening of this new facility in Kota Kinabalu will complement its counterpart in Kuching and both will function collectively as parts distribution centres for after sales parts and components for East Malaysia,” said Edmund Lim, Proton Edar’s vice president of sales and aftersales.
“This overall improvement in storage has created a buffer for demand surges and fluctuations, enabling us to increase parts throughput and as of today, we are rapidly addressing the backlog of orders from our dealers and customer..

2025 Proton X70 facelift officially launching on Aug 15

The 2025 Proton X70 facelift will be officially launched on August 15. That’s seven days more till the price reveal of the refreshed SUV, which we’ve detailed in full last week.
Proton posted a ‘7 days to go’ graphic on its social media, saying that “Malaysia’s best-selling premium SUV is about to redefine expectations. Just seven days until the grand unveiling of the 2025 Proton X70. Experience ‘Intelligence That Inspires’ live on 15 August”. The post was accompanied by a registration of interest link.
This 2025 facelift is a big deal for the X70, as this is the first big refresh since the SUV – Proton’s first Geely-based model – was launched way back in December 2018. Since then, the C-segment SUV has gone CKD and received some updates before reaching the 100,000 units sales landmark.
Like the new face? There’s more to the fresh look than just a new grille, and there are even some unique-to-Proton parts seen here too, which isn’t found on the Geely Boyue – full story here. Looks aside, the big news is the debut of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in a Proton, along with a bigger screen/upgraded infotainment system. New ambient lighting and cabin colour theme too, among other interior changes – see more here.

Proton set to return to UK later this decade as part of AHTV investment; Australia, New Zealand also planned

A bombshell report from Autocar suggests that Proton is on the verge of a major return to export markets. The British publication stated that the national carmaker is set to begin selling cars in the UK again, quoting sources close to CEO Li Chunrong.
This huge planned expansion of exports, which will also see the brand enter new right-hand-drive markets in Asia and Africa as well as returning to Australia and New Zealand, is said to be part of Geely’s multibillion-dollar investment into Proton’s new headquarters and manufacturing base at the Automotive Hi-Tech Valley (AHTV) in Tanjung Malim.
Crucial to those plans is the increased production capacity as part of the factory’s redevelopment, which will enable the company to finally pursue its ambition of massively growing exports. “With the investments in place, Proton will have the means to return to markets it departed, while also entering new markets,” one source said.
Autocar added that while no official timeline was given, it was told a return to major markets would happen “later this decade.” Proton pulled out of the UK market in 2014, the publication said.

Plans for Proton to become Geely’s right-hand-drive production hub have existed ever since the two companies entered their strategic partnership in 2017, but they never quite came to fruition. That’s to be expected, given the company has had to focus on growing local sales – a task made more difficult by the ensuing COVID-19 pandemic.
