2024 Proton X50 RC looks the same because Geely Binyue facelift styling is ‘too aggressive’ – DCEO

The model year 2024 Proton X50 has an unchanged exteriorEarlier today, Proton unveiled the 2024 model year X50 a.k.a. X50 RC. RC stands for Running Change, which means that this is not a facelift, and those who were expecting to see a refreshed face, or even wheels/colours, were left disappointed.
It’s now almost four years since the B-segment SUV debut in 2020, but Proton has seen fit to soldier on with the X50’s original look, choosing to focus instead on improvements to NVH and the infotainment system, which we’ve detailed in full here along with the extra equipment. So, what’s behind the call to not alter the design, even by just a bit?
“We have plans to change the physical, but after we assessed the design, whatever that Geely has, it’s not suitable for the Malaysian market because it’s too aggressive. This model is sexy, if we change it won’t be sexy, it will be ugly,” Proton deputy CEO Roslan Abdullah told paultan.org, adding that the ‘internal work’ had progressed and waiting for a suitable new skin would be ‘too late’.

The 2021 Geely Binyue Pro’s face was deemed to be too aggressive for Malaysia“It’s a waste (sayang) that the upgraded one at Geely is too aggressive, which I don’t think the customers will continue buying,” he reiterated. The face that is deemed to be too much for Malaysia is the mug of the 2021 Geely Binyue Pro – take a look at it and share your thoughts.

Proton Apple CarPlay, Android Auto will only come on new model launches – existing cars will not support it

A lot of you will have been waiting with bated breath for Proton to add the long-overdue Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality to its models. Some will have even bought cars recently with the expectation that these features will be added through an over-the-air (OTA) update. Well, sorry to burst your bubble, but the latter has been emphatically ruled out.
That’s right, Proton has confirmed that existing cars – including the X90, S70 and even the just-launched 2024 X50 RC – will not receive Apple CarPlay nor Android Auto, not even OTA as the company previously indicated. This was intimated to paultan.org by deputy CEO Roslan Abdullah and head of group engineering and technical Haizam Ghazali during the X50 launch event.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto will likely only be added to the X70 faceliftInstead, the two leading smartphone connectivity services will only be introduced through new model launches, including the forthcoming facelifted X70 and possibly 2025 model year updates for the X90 and S70. This means that existing customers – some of which will have based at least some of their purchasing decisions on that elusive OTA update – will be left out in the cold.
There is light at the end of the tunnel, however – Roslan told us that Proton is in the final stages of getting licence approval from Apple, so expect the very next launch, the facelifted X70, to have CarPlay and Android Auto support.

2024 Proton X50 RC launched – same looks, better 360 cam and NVH, still RM86k-RM113k, new RM7k discount

Almost four years on from the model’s original debut in 2020 and with more than 110,000 units sold across 12 right-hand-drive markets, the Proton X50 arrives for the 2024 model-year as the X50 RC, or short for Running Change.
Proton’s updated B-segment SUV is offered in the same Standard, Executive, Premium and Flagship variants, priced at RM86,300, RM93,300, RM101,800 and RM113,300, respectively, on-the-road without insurance. These are unchanged from current pricing for the X50.
As you’ll see in these images, the exterior is essentially carried over from the outgoing model. Proton makes it clear that this not a facelift, and that a more significant refresh that’s based on the Geely Binyue Cool will arrive later on in the X50’s life cycle.

Key powertrain specifications for the 2024 X50 remain unchanged, carrying over the 1.5 litre turbocharged inline-three cylinder petrol engine.
The Standard, Executive and Premium use the port-injection version with 150 PS and 226 Nm of torque, while the Flagship retains the direct injection TGDi unit with 177 PS and 255 Nm. All variants are mated with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox sending drive to the front wheels.

2024 Proton X50 to be launched next week, June 4

What do we have here? A posting on social media by a Proton showroom representative suggests that the 2024 Proton X50 will be unveiled on Tuesday, June 4. That’s right after this long weekend!
Before you get too excited though, the teaser image shows a car that looks virtually identical to the current model, so this is likely just a minor update and not a full-fledged facelift. The spyshots of the proper X50 facelift we’ve seen recently are perhaps of a more extensive refresh set for later on, not this year.
So, what to expect from this updated 2024 version, then? No exact details are official just yet, but it’s safe to assume it will get a few small upgrades/enhancements, and hopefully a price revision as well. The X50 is under fire from a few newer models with ultra-competitive prices after all, and it has been offered with substantial discounts lately.
We’ll have to wait until Tuesday to find out the exact changes made to Proton’s popular B-segment SUV. Better safety package, cheaper price, perhaps upgraded equipment list?
Read the full report here on paultan.org at 11am this coming Tuesday.
UPDATE: Proton has released an official teaser below, confirming the launch date.

Proton introduces ‘5-Star Rating’ initiative to uplift after-sales service levels; monthly dealer assessment

Proton has introduced a ‘5-Star Rating’ initiative to raise the standards of after-sales service, recognising dealers who have achieved an outstanding level. This is an extension of the Proton Operational Excellence (POE) initiative that started in March 2023.
The new rating is awarded to dealers based on their POE score and ‘Service Quality’ (SQ), encouraging all outlets to achieve and maintain a high level of customer service and satisfaction. SQ is evaluated in two categories, namely ‘Speed’ and ‘Compliance’, and these are then measured over six focus areas. The end goal is for outlets to manage customers concerns effectively and to deliver the best experience.
Proton’s POE initiative emphasises adherence to a ‘thorough list of requirements’ such as service process, technician competency, stock inventory and customer management. It was launched with the primary aim of enhancing the business performance of outlets and improving the operations efficiency of service centres nationwide.

Each outlet is assessed on a monthly basis and the results are then shared with all dealers to ‘clearly indicate where they stand within the network’. Proton’s after-sales division then works closely with the outlets to proactively raise their service levels and scores – this is done via quarterly roadshows (also held to give recognition to top achievers) and the sharing of best practices, the carmaker sa..

Proton EV brand naming contest – 22k have guessed name of Geely Galaxy E5-based model, ends June 5

If you haven’t already heard, Proton will soon debut an electric vehicle, which will fall under a new EV brand. Earlier this month, Proton New Energy Technology (Pro-Net) announced a naming contest for the brand, called the Proton EV Brand Name Contest.
The contest concludes on June 5 (11.59 pm), which means that there are six days more for you to join. To do so, fill up a registration form, input your guess and match images to the order of the given statements. You’ll then stand a chance to win a grand prize of RM5,000 cash, or RM1,500 for second, RM1,000 for third and RM100 for the other top-five entries. Pro-Net says that it has received over 22,440 entries so far
“The overwhelming response to the Proton EV Brand Name Contest is a testament to the passion and excitement shared by Malaysians as we usher in a new era of automotive excellence. With the finish line in sight, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to all participants and encourage those who have yet to join the competition to seize this final opportunity to leave their mark on automotive history,” said Zhang Qiang, CEO of Pro-Net.
The contest announcement had a teaser of an outline drawing, which is tacit confirmation that new Proton EV will be based on the Geely Galaxy E5 that was revealed earlier this month – that SUV’s roof rails and slim headlights are visible in the outline.
The E5 was already widely touted to be the donor car for Proton’s EV, given that it has reportedly been de..
