Proton S70 meets 2k units monthly sales target in Q1 2024, production ramped up to meet higher demand

Proton sold a total of 39,150 units in the first quarter of 2024, including domestic and export shipments. Based on Malaysia’s estimated total industry volume (TIV) of 202,492 units for the first three months of the year, Proton’s market share is estimated at 19.3%, which is a 5.1% growth and good for second place overall behind Perodua.
In this period, Proton shifted 5,828 units of the new S70, including 2,072 units in March. “While production volume is still catching up to demand as close attention is being paid to product quality, the C-segment sedan class leader is now the second best selling model in the Proton range,” the company said in a statement.
“Production is not slow, but what we’re maintaining is ensuring the quality, because this is a new model for us, and we have to ensure parts quality maturity, as well as our process – assembly maturity. The stock is being produced, but we’re checking thoroughly to ensure that we don’t face the similar problems as when we were so eager to deliver the car to the market,” Proton deputy CEO Roslan Abdullah said earlier this year.

“We had a good lesson learned in the past and we won’t make the same mistake, but we’re increasing deliveries starting this month,” he added, without naming the previous model.
Proton’s claim of the S70 being the best-selling C-segment sedan in Malaysia isn’t a surprise, as the plan was to offer a ‘C-segment sedan’ (..

Proton has announced that it sold 12,666 units (domestic and export) in March 2024, a 6.88% decrease (or 936 units) from the 13,602 units it shifted in February. The numbers attained last month brings total volume for the automaker to 39,150 units in the first quarter of 2024.
As for market share, the company estimates it to be at 19.3% for March, which is good enough for it to maintain its second-place ranking in the overall sales table.
In terms of model specific numbers, no surprise to find that the Saga continues to be the brand’s top seller, with 5,906 units shifted in March, including 93 units for the export market. The company said that the 18,247 units sold in the first quarter gives the model its strongest Q1 performance in 12 years.
In second place was the S70 sedan, with 2,072 units (of which 35 units were exports) delivered last month, a 10.46% decrease (or 242 units) from the 2,314 units managed in February. The company added that production volume is still catching up to demand as close attention is being paid to product quality.

The third-best performer for Proton last month was the Persona, with 1,665 units sold. Like it was in February, the sedan finished slightly ahead of the X50, which recorded 1,6,26 units for the month.
Next was the X70, with the 603 units sold a 35.5% improvement in volume over 456 units recorded in February. As for the Iriz, 468 units were sold in March, and rounding off things was the X90, with 326 units delivered to customers..

Proton Saga posts strongest start to a year since 2013 – 18,247 units sold in Q1 2024; 5,906 units in March

The Proton Saga posted its best Q1 sales volume since 2013 with 18,247 units delivered in the first three months of 2024. In March alone, 5,906 units of the Saga (including 93 units for export) made their way to customers, placing the model second in the Malaysian A-segment sedan market.
The March 2024 sales volume for the Saga is less when compared to the same month last year (6,313 units), but more units of the sedan were sold in Q1 2024 than in Q1 2023 (17,446 units). Last year, Proton sold a total of 70,184 units of the Saga, so the Q1 2024 figure is 26% of that.
At present, all variants of the Saga are powered by a 1.3 litre naturally-aspirated inline-four petrol engine, paired with either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission.
The range starts from RM34,800 on-the-road without insurance for the base 1.3L Standard MT and goes all the way up to RM44,800 for the range-topping 1.3L Premium S AT – the 1.3L Standard (RM38,800) and 1.3L Premium AT (RM41,800) sit between the two ends.

Proton EV in 2025 – all-new model being co-developed with Geely, not a rebadge of existing car: Roslan

National carmaker Proton is expecting to release its electric vehicle model in 2025, and this will be an all-new model that is co-developed by Proton and Geely, and it will not be a rebadged version of an existing model, Proton deputy CEO Roslan Abdullah has said.
The upcoming, fully electric model from this joint development may spawn both a Geely version as well as a Proton version. This has completed its design and prototype stages, and it is currently undergoing testing, Roslan said. As for the segment of the EV, “We will let you know closer to the time of its launch,” the deputy CEO said, also not revealing the upcoming model’s bodystyle.
There will likely be a staggered release of announcements regarding Proton’s EV model, and the deputy CEO cites the smart brand’s introduction as an example, where announcements were made for the start of production, opening of bookings, and the like.

In this EV model’s joint development with Geely, Proton is contributing to the model’s R&D with input for its use in the Malaysian environment, Roslan said. Given the co-development between the two companies, there could be both a Geely version as well as a Proton version, the former being for other markets.
Regardless of the brand, all versions of the upcoming co-developed EV will initially be manufactured in China because manufacturing this model in Malaysia will require new facilities, said Roslan.
