Proton diversifies income stream, ‘Global Services’ handles cafe, merchandise, R3 division, solar panels

Proton is diversifying its operations and revenue stream by exploring opportunities within the automotive ecosystem and beyond, and leading the effort is Proton Global Services (PGS), a wholly owned subsidiary of Proton Edar.
Established in 2021 with just one F&B and merchandise outlet, PGS has expanded its scope of operations to now encompass six key areas, namely Lifestyle, Engineering, Training, New Energy, Logistics and R3 Motorsports. Led by CEO Lee Yeet Chuan, revenue has increased exponentially from below RM1 million in 2021 to 19 times that at the end of 2023. PGS is now a key contributor to Proton’s business network.
PGS’ most visible businesses are the Lifestyle and R3 Motorsports divisions. The former is tasked with managing the Proton Cafe and selling Proton merchandise while the latter is focused on developing performance variants and running Proton’s racing activities.
Launched in 2021, Proton Cafe offers customers freshly brewed coffee and food items in a relaxed setting. To date, 16 outlets are operating at Proton dealerships and there are plans to reach 25 outlets by 2025. As for merchandising, Proton merch has long been available, but commercialisation has now started under PGS. There are currently 20 Proton merchandise partners nationwide as well as a virtual shop at protonmerchandise.com.
R3 Motorsports celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2023 with the launch of the Proton X50 R3 20th Anniversary Edition. This year, the division is focusin..

Proton S70 review – better buy vs City and Vios?

Here it is, my full in-depth review of the new Proton S70. As usual it’s very long – though my initial X50 review was even longer – but it covers all you need to know about Proton’s latest sedan – everything that is good and bad, plus how it compares against the X50, Honda City and Toyota Vios.
The review covers the segment confusion (whether it’s a B or C, and if that’s even relevant – short answer, no), variant/price breakdown, interior quality and space, fit and finish issues, spec levels, equipment omissions, performance, fuel economy, refinement, ride and handling, ADAS, the lot. It’s purely intended for those looking to buy the S70, hence the detail and length.
As a quick recap, the Proton S70 comes in four variants: Executive for RM73,800, Premium for RM79,800, Flagship for RM89,800 and Flagship X for RM94,800. My take is, do ignore the first two for their complete lack any form of ADAS active safety features – AEB at least should be a bare-minimum essential item for any new car in 2024, and I don’t buy Proton’s reasoning for this omission one bit.
All variants get the same 1.5 litre three-cylinder MPI turbo engine with 150 PS and 226 Nm of torque, mated to a seven-speed wet dual clutch transmission. The combo is a big upgrade over the base Geely Emgrand’s 1.5 NA and CVT package, but Proton’s locally-led transplant job leaves a lot to be desired. More on the poorly calibrated transmission/throttle in the video above.

Proton S70 R3 racecar confirmed for Sepang 1,000 km (S1k) endurance race – sportier R3 roadcar to follow?

Proton ‘S70 GT’ rendered by Theophilus ChinNational carmaker Proton has announced that its motorsport arm, R3 Motorsports is developing a Proton S70 race car for entry into the Sepang 1000km (S1K) endurance race.
The carmaker’s R3 division launched the X50 R3 20th Anniversary Edition last October, and it could be joined in the road car line-up by an R3-enhanced version of the S70 sedan, according to Proton deputy CEO Roslan Abdullah earlier this month.
Recent R3 editions such as the Saga R3 and Iriz R3, while limited in production, were largely visual in changes, with their powertrains carried over from existing variants of their respective models. This would not be the case with the potential ‘S70 R3’ roadgoing model, Roslan told The Sun.
Proton is focused on delivering a comprehensive performance package for the S70, rather than a cosmetic makeover, with the aim of distancing the potential S70 R3 road car from the X50 R3 20th Anniversary Edition that is largely unchanged from a mechanical standpoint.

Proton ‘S70 GT’ rendered by Theophilus ChinAs it stands, there already is performance headroom for the S70 in terms of what is available from the wider Proton inventory of engines, as the sedan is currently offered with the port-injection version of the 1.5 litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol powerplant, which makes 150 PS and 226 Nm in the S70 currently.
The direct-injected TGDi unit as specified in the X50 makes 177 PS and 255 Nm, offer..

2024 Proton X70 facelift spied – new wheels from Geely Boyue FL, old dashboard from current model

The upcoming 2024 Proton X70 facelift has been spied testing in public once again, this time also by a paultan.org who wishes to remain anonymous. This comes shortly after the most recent sighting of the updated C-segment SUV last week.
This most recent sighting is claimed to have taken place in Cheras, and while there continues to be some amount of camouflage, we can now see the facelifted X70’s wheels, and here these can be seen to be of the design used on the Geely Boyue update that emerged in 2022.
Although the exterior of this most recently-sighted development vehicle continues to be camouflaged much as before, our anonymous source tells us that the interior of the upcoming, revised X70 sports the same dashboard design as on the current model.
Where this differs from the 2022 Boyue update is in its infotainment unit, the newer model sporting a rectangular infotainment screen whereas the existing X70 employs a rounded-trapezoidal design.
Elsewhere, the exterior of the upcoming X70 facelift test unit appears to be as before, its revised headlamps and L-shaped DRL arc just about visible from this side profile angle. As before, the grille on the upcoming X70 facelift is different from that of the equivalent Geely Boyue, with the Proton getting its own cascading pin design.
With the more frequent sighting of development vehicles for the Proton X70 facelift, with a growing level of detail becoming visible, a formal debut could be taking place soon. Would you be shoppi..

Proton Arena was once crash tested by ANCAP in 2009 – two-door ute was given a one-star safety rating

For throwback Thursday (last week), the Australasian New Car Assessment Programme (ANCAP) dug through its archives and uploaded a video of a crash test involving the Proton Jumbuck, which we know here as the Arena.
The Arena is based on the Wira but with two less seats to make room for a bed at the back. Launched in Malaysia in 2002, the ute would eventually make its way to Australia in 2003 and continued to be sold there until 2009. A replacement was mooted in the past but this never materialised.
ANCAP tested the Jumbuck in September 2009 and gave it a one-star rating in terms of occupant protection, with the vehicle scoring just 1 out of 16 points in the offset crash test carried out at 64 km/h.
In its report, ANCAP said “the passenger compartment was severely deformed” and “protection from head injury was poor for the driver and passenger.” The Jumbuck did better in the side impact crash test with a score of 7.39 out of 16 points, although it was pointed out that “there was a high risk of life-threatening chest injury for the driver.”
ANCAP also pointed out “the Jumbuck has minimal safety features,” as no variants of the model came with airbags, seatbelt pretensioners, ABS/EBD/brake assist, electronic stability control and more. Following the report, Proton Cars Australia advised ANCAP that this model is being discontinued and the Jumbuck was axed after seven years in Australia.
In the years after the Jumbuck, other Pro..
