Proton CEO Li Chunrong says Geely-based models to be updated – X70, X50 facelift to be launched soon?

Proton CEO Li Chunrong has said during the company’s CNY media appreciation dinner yesterday that Geely-based models will be updated as part of the company’s product strategy. At present, the four models in the carmaker’s line-up that are derived from existing Geely cars are the X50, X70, X90 and S70.
This isn’t much of a surprise given we have seen camouflaged development units of the X50 and X70 in the past. In the case of the X50, spyshots suggest the facelift for the B-segment SUV will follow the Binyue Cool. Meanwhile, the X70 won’t adopt the look of the Boyue Pro or Azkarra, but will instead get changes seen on the refreshed Boyue that surfaced in China in 2022.
As for the X90, the D-segment SUV was launched in Malaysia last May and is based on the Haoyue, which has been replaced with the Haoyue L in China. Given the X90 is not even a year old, it’s unlikely the SUV will get a refresh anytime soon. Instead, a rolling update is more likely and should include support for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay as we’ve previously reported.
Similarly, the S70 that was launched last November is a fresh product for Proton. Based on the fourth-generation Emgrand but extensively re-engineered for Malaysia to offer turbo power, the sedan could also get a rolling update, although the company isn’t confirming anything (including AACP support) for now.

Automotive Hi-Tech Valley (AHTV) Tanjong Malim currently has 20 operational vendors, says Proton

At yesterday’s Proton Chinese New Year media appreciation dinner, the carmaker provided some updates on the Automotive High Tech Valley (AHTV) in Tanjong Malim. As we’ve previously reported, Proton will fully relocate all its manufacturing and research and design facilities there by 2026.
According to Proton, aggressive development is currently being carried out at the AHTV vendor park to support the carmaker. It went on to say that there are currently 20 vendors operational at the site, with more expected to come in when parcel five is ready this year.
The company also pointed out that four vendors have begun new construction to expand their operation in AHTV. For companies looking to set up shop in AHTV, six new factories within the vendor park with a total of 400,000 square feet will be ready for lease in 2024.
AHTV was announced in April 2022 with the purpose of being an international automotive hub for NEVs (new energy vehicles, China’s term for electrified vehicles) and attract investments both locally and from overseas.
In October last year, DRB-Hicom (Proton’s majority stakeholder) and Zhejiang Geely Holding Group signed a master collaboration agreement (MCA) that sets underlying principles, governance framework and mutual commitment for the AHTV project, including specific roles to be undertaken for development and promotional initiatives.

Next-gen Proton Saga, Persona to be developed in new R&D centre in Hangzhou – to include NEV hybrids too!

Next-generation Proton Saga rendered by Theophilus Chin
At the Proton Chinese New Year media appreciation dinner today, CEO Li Chunrong shared a few updates regarding the national carmaker’s future plans. Notably, these included a surprising announcement concerning its homegrown models, reinforcing the notion that its lineup won’t be entirely replaced by Geely-based models.
Li confirmed that Proton will be setting up a new R&D centre in Hangzhou, China specifically for the development of its homegrown models, currently consisting of the Saga, Persona and Iriz. This presumably means that it will benefit from closer cooperation with Geely, which is also based in Hangzhou.
As yet, it’s unclear if the new models will be a development of the current cars or be based on Geely’s platforms – like the B-segment Modular Platform (BMA) that underpins the X50 and S70.

Whichever route Proton takes, we can safety assume these cars won’t simply be rebadged versions of existing Geely models and will have considerably greater local input. Also unclear is the timeline for the introduction of these new homegrown cars, which has been intentionally left open for debate.
It’s also been confirmed that Proton will be introducing a New Energy Vehicle (NEV, think hybrid or electric vehicle) based not on a Geely platform, but on the Saga/Persona/Iriz platform. This will likely be a mild hybrid model that uses the 1.5 litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine an..

Proton to launch its first EV very soon – second EV to follow after 6-8 months; rebadged Geely Geometry?

Proton CEO Li Chunrong has revealed the company is set to launch its own-brand electric vehicle (EV) “very soon.” This echoes what was said by Proton chairman Datuk Seri Syed Faisal Albar during the launch of the S70 last November, suggesting the carmaker is on track to meet the ministry of international trade and industry’s (MITI) expectations.
As a brief recap, MITI previously said the government is optimistic that Proton and Perodua can produce the first national electric vehicle (EV) by 2025, which is a target revealed by deputy MITI minister Liew Chin Tong in parliament.
A twist in the tale is Li saying in his welcome speech that Proton will be launching not one, but two EVs, with the second said to arrive between six to eight months after the first. The Proton CEO withheld from sharing further details for now.
Proton has done an EV before in the form of an Iriz prototype more than eight years ago, although that project never led to a series production model. Given the 2025 EV target for Proton (and Perodua) was set sometime in November 2023, it’s a rather open-ended discussion on what Proton’s first EV might be with such a supposedly tight timeline.
Could it be an all-electric version of an existing model currently on sale or will it be a re-engineered version of something that Geely already has in its line-up? On the latter, Geely’s Geometry line-up has some appropriate candidates like the A, C, E and Panda. Which of the two routes do you think Proto..

2024 Proton X70 facelift spied – C-segment SUV based on updated Geely Boyue to launch in Malaysia soon?

A few months on from the last sighting of the Proton X70 facelift, the updated C-segment SUV from the national carmaker has been sighted once again, with these most recent images provided to us here at paultan.org by a reader who wishes to remain anonymous.
Here, the development unit continues to be mostly clad in camouflage foil, however the previous example’s T-shaped shroud has made way for the grill emblem that, while still concealed, now wears just an extension of the foil applied elsewhere on the vehicle’s bodywork.
There is now also slightly more of its headlamps visible on this example, with each headlamp now revealing more of its L-shaped DRL arc. As referenced previously, the upcoming Proton X70 facelift will be based on the 2022 Geely Boyue update, and not the Boyue Pro or Azkarra.

Wheels on this X70 facelift development unit appear to still be concealed, though can be seen to be of a five-spoke silhouette of sorts. As with the previous sighting of the X70 FL, these could be the double-five-spoke units on the Boyue facelift.
The presence of a sunroof suggests that the test unit sighted here is of the higher, Premium variant, if the pre-facelift X70 variant convention is followed. For now, there still isn’t much of a look into the interior of the Boyue-based X70 facelift, though the update can also be presumed to be similar to that of the Geely model as well.
The Proton X70 was most recently updated with the 1.5 TGDi Premium X 2WD variant tha..
