Proton S70 – 109 units registered in Dec 2023; over 5k bookings to date, but customer deliveries yet to start

Officially unveiled on November 28, the Proton S70 was the final big launch of 2023. Positioned as a ‘C-segment sedan at City/Vios prices’, the new model created lots of chatter and interest. However, customer deliveries have yet to begin, and so far, only 109 units have been registered.
This was revealed in Proton’s 2023 sales announcement, and the 109 units are presumably test drive units for dealerships. However, the company says that customer deliveries will begin this year and the S70 will contribute meaningfully to P1’s sales figures in 2014. Bookings have breached the 5,000 units mark.
“As for the Proton S70, customer deliveries will begin in 2024 and to date, more than 5,000 bookings have been received so expect the model to contribute to sales numbers considerably this year,” the company said in the release. “Looking ahead to 2024, we are confident that we will sustain this momentum, supported by the introduction of our new model, the S70,” said Proton CEO Li Chunrong.

On December 7, Proton deputy CEO Roslan Abdullah said that early bird customers can expect to receive their new cars ‘from next week’. He also said then that the waiting period is one month and that the number of deliveries aren’t expected to very high initially, as customers are requesting to have their cars registered in 2024.
The Proton S70 comes in four variants, and they are the Executive, Premium, Flagship and Flagship X. The entry-level Exec kicks off the range at RM73,..

Proton sold 154,611 units in 2023, highest since 2012 – up 9.3% from 2021, 19.4% share; Saga, X50 best sellers

Proton has announced that it sold 12,711 units in December 2023, bringing the national automaker’s final sales tally for the year to 154,611 units (domestic and export), a 9.3% increase over the 141,432 units it managed in 2022. The result marks the company’s best sales performance since 2012.
The numbers are good enough to maintain its second-place ranking in overall sales for the year, making it the fifth consecutive year it has accomplished the feat. As for market share, the company calculates it to be 19.4% on the back of an improved total industry volume estimated at 794,948 units, which is approximately 10.3% more than 2022’s TIV.
In terms of model specific numbers, the company said that a rebound in demand for the PIES models (Persona, Iriz, Exora and Saga) powered the sales growth last year. No surprise to find that the Saga leading the line yet again for the brand. The company’s best-selling model shifted to the tune of 70,184 units, making for its best performance since 2012.
Those numbers – which are up from the 55,878 units sold in 2022 – also made the Saga the fourth best-selling vehicle in Malaysia for 2023. However, the honour of having the highest percentage gains goes to the Persona. After suffering severe production issues due to chip supply shortages in 2022, sales of the B-segment sedan rebounded by 48.9% to 24,362 units, placing the model second in its class.
Sales of the Iriz also improved in 2023, with the hatchback seeing a 33.8..

Proton in 2024 – X70 and X50 facelifts; Persona, Saga, Iriz updates?; smart #3 to be launched in Malaysia?

Proton had quite a few highlights in 2023. For one, the carmaker managed to surpass its 2022 sales tally (141,432 units) by selling a total of 154,611 units in 2023 – a 9.3% increase from last year.
There were also a few important launches that took place, with the big one being the S70, its first all-new sedan in a long time that went on sale in November 2023. Winding the clock back further to May 2023, Proton introduced its third SUV model in the form of the three-row X90, which is also the first in the line-up to get a mild hybrid powertrain.
Other launches include the X50 R3 20th Anniversary Edition, which was introduced in the year the B-segment SUV celebrated its third anniversary last year while continuing to be the fastest-selling SUV model in Malaysian history.
The X70 and Saga were updated too, with the latter receiving a new four-speed automatic transmission from Aisin rather than Hyundai. As for the C-segment SUV, its list of variants grew to six last year with the addition of the 1.5 TGDi Premium X.
Now that we’re in 2024 (Happy New Year, by the way), what can we expect to see from Proton this year? Here’s what we have in mind.
Proton X70 facelift MC2
This one isn’t too much of a surprise given the few sightings of camouflaged X70sundergoing road trials on our roads. The X70 previously got its first minor change (MC) back in 2022, which saw some very minor styling tweaks and a new engine option.
With the impending facelift, or MC2 as some have c..

Proton Operational Excellence initiative introduced to ‘level up’ service centres, build customer trust in brand

Proton has introduced the Proton Operational Excellence (POE) initiative to enhance customer satisfaction. The carmaker says that this ‘meticulous strategy’ aims to improve the performance of Proton’s service centres nationwide, which in turn will increase customer trust.
Starting with 13 pilot outlets, POE will integrate into 3S and 4S facilities outlets nationwide in stages. “We at Proton are dedicated to ensuring a premium level of service for every customer – from their first step into our dealerships, through the purchasing process and during subsequent service visits,” said Roslan Abdullah, CEO of Proton Edar.
Proton says that POE reflects its dedication to aftersales operational efficiency and service quality. Focus areas include adherence to high-quality service processes, technician competencies, future Dealer Management System (DMS) integration and fostering trust in the brand.
Strategies include securing preferred appointment dates and aligning service processes with customer needs. Technician development is also central to POE, with comprehensive training programs ensuring continuous skill elevation. This initiative equips technicians with advanced knowledge, keeping them at the forefront of automotive technology for efficient resolution of issues.
“Proton has already undergone major transformations, with network rationalisation and parts warehouse expansion. Our comprehensive network rationalisation ensures optimal covera..

Proton C70 rendered – S70 in two-door coupe form; spiritual successor to both the Satria and Putra?

Ready for more renders of the Proton S70 in different body styles? After creating a hatchback version of the newly launched model, rendering wiz Theophilus Chin is back again with an imagining of the S70 as a two-door coupe.
The idea behind these renders steams from the Wira, which was not only offered as a sedan, but also made into a few derivatives including a hatchback (Satria), a two-door coupe (Putra) and even an ute (Arena). In Theo’s mind, if the S70 is considered to be a descendant of the Wira, this C70 he has created would be a spiritual successor to both the Satria and Putra.
The vehicle you see before is based on the Audi quattro concept that was presented at the Paris Motor Show in 2010. From this starting point, Theo grafted on the face of the S70 while also revising a few other areas such as the positioning of the side mirrors, the door shut lines as well as introducing a new character line and creased section to the sides.

As for the rear, the Audi concept’s rear wing gets deleted and the surrounding area is revised to accommodate the S70’s wraparound taillight assembly and connecting trim piece. A proper boot is also added, while the rear bumper is overhauled to feature oval-shaped exhaust outlets and a diffuser element.
So, what do you think of Theo’s work? Does it look right to be a spiritual successor to the Satria and Putra, which are models that Proton fans still covet? Share your thoughts with us in the comments below.

Proton S70 deliveries to begin next week – over 3,600 bookings so far; waiting period now at one month

Customers who placed an order for the newly launched Proton S70 can expect to receive their cars beginning from next week. This is according to Proton Edar CEO Roslan Abdullah, who was present at today’s 2023 Proton Operational Excellence media tour event in Bangi.
Roslan’s response was to a question posed by paultan.org on the sidelines of the event regarding when S70 deliveries will begin. Launched in late November this year, deliveries of the sedan appeared to be seemingly delayed, with no sales figure listed for it in the carmaker’s November 2023 sales report.
However, we now know that the S70 will make its way to customers very soon. Roslan also stated that Proton has received 3,600 bookings for the sedan so far and it has 800 units ready to be delivered.
Additionally, he said the waiting period is currently one month and that the number of deliveries aren’t expected to very high initially as customers are requesting to have their cars registered in 2024 rather than in the final few days of 2023.
How many of you are eagerly waiting for your S70? Which variant and what colour did you opt for? It won’t be long before you get your hands on your new ride, so just a little more patience.

Proton looking to expand volume by exporting beyond ASEAN – Tg Malim aims 500k production, 50% export

Proton is looking to greatly increase its production volume to 500,000 units, of which 50% are destined for export markets. This was revealed by Proton CEO Dr Li Chunrong during a press conference at the recent launch of the Proton S70.
This comes following a question posed to Li, who was asked by paultan.org on why Proton is taking so long to penetrate into the Thailand and Indonesia markets when it was previously reported that Geely wants Proton to be one of the top three automakers in the ASEAN region.
Li responded by first highlighting Thailand and Indonesia’s vehicle production figures which are well over a million units. He then pointed out that competition is a lot more intense in those markets compared to in Malaysia. “So, if you want to compete there, you must be ready with your product, this is important,” said Li.

The Proton CEO also acknowledged that the company’s previous entry into Thailand and Indonesia wasn’t highly fruitful. “Because we lost before in Thailand and Indonesia. So, we don’t want to easily to lose a second time, so we must prepare, then we can go.
Li then pointed out that there are plenty of other markets for Proton to explore, adding that it is possible to expand the number of markets the company can export to. He went on to say that Proton’s two shareholders – DRB-Hicom (50.1%) and Geely (49.9%) are discussing to produce 500,000 cars in Malaysia, with 50% being for exports. “As management, we must su..
