Proton eMas 7 official launch date confirmed – Dec 16

Proton has revealed on its social media that the eMas 7 – the company’s first electric vehicle – will be officially launched on December 16. That’s less than a week away before the EV SUV finally makes its debut after a prolonged teaser phase.
By the way, the eMas 7 is present at the ongoing Kuala Lumpur International Motor Show (KLIMS) 2024 wearing a fresh ‘Nadi’ wrap, so you can head to MITEC in KL if you want a close up look – the show’s last day is tomorrow, December 11.
Order books for the eMas 7 has been open since its interior reveal at ACE 2024 in October. We’ve since got to drive the SUV at Proton’s semi high-speed test track in Shah Alam, and have shared with you our first impressions of the Geely Galaxy E5 twin, which compares favourably against the BYD Atto 3, Malaysia’s best-selling EV – review here.

There are two variants of the eMas 7 – base Prime and top Premium. The Prime uses a 49.52 kWh version of Geely’s Aegis short blade lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery for a WLTP-rated range of 345 km (thumbs up to Proton for advertising the more realistic cycle instead of NEDC, which is 410 km, or the optimistic CLTC). The Premium’s 60.22 kWh pack delivers 410 km range (470 km NEDC).
Both support AC charging at a max rate of 11 kW, with the Prime needing 4.9 hours to get from 30-80% state of charge (SoC), and 6.1 hours for the Premium. The range-topper can suck in DC power of up to 100 kW (Prime 80 kW), and both can get fr..

Proton sold 12,194 units in Nov 2024 – YTD at 137,751 units, 18.8% market share, exports exceed 2023 total

Proton has announced that it sold 12,194 units (domestic and export) in November, a decrease of 4.7% (or 605 units) compared to the 12,799 units shifted in October. According to the national automaker, the drop is however in-line with the contraction in total industry volume (TIV) of 4.1% for Malaysian automotive sales.
Total sales for the year after 11 months stands at 137,751 units, allowing the carmaker to retain its position as the second most popular brand in the national sales rankings. The company estimates it market share for the month to be at 18.2%, with its YTD share standing at 18.8%.
As usual, the Saga continued to fly the flag, with the 5,916 units shifted in November making it the top performer for the brand. Year-to-date numbers for the model stands at 66,094 units, positioning it to breach the 70,000 total sales mark for a second year in a row.
In second place was the X50, with the 1,911 units sold last month making it the most popular SUV for the brand. In all, 21,033 units of the B-segment model have been delivered this year. As for the X70, sales of the facelifted SUV last month increased by 7.7% month-on-month to 1,065 units, bringing its YTD total to 7,536 units.
The X70 is actually the automaker’s fifth best-selling model for the month, because the Persona, with 1,394 units (YTD, 17,325 units), and the S70, with 1,312 units (YTD, 17,512 units), are placed in third and fourth in terms of volume for November.
Contributing to the numbers was the Iri..

Proton eMas 7 Nadi – EV gets final wrap before launch

There has been no shortage of exterior wraps for the Proton eMas 7, and the movement continues with this one, which dresses up the all-electric SUV in a striking chrome finish, replete with a pattern consisting of dotted shaped decals.
On display at KLIMS 2024, the Nadi eMas 7 is, as its suffix implies, a pulse on sustainability, with the aim being to see how many kilogrammes of CO2 can be reduced annually with each eMas7 on the road. The SUV isn’t yet, of course, but this is the last masking exercise for it, as it is set to be launched on December 16.
Given all that has been seen and written about it, everyone should know the eMas 7 well enough by now, but let’s recap it once more. It’s based on the Geely Galaxy E5, which incidentally has just made its way to Thailand as the EX5, but Proton says the two companies worked together concurrently on the model, involving 230 Proton engineers and designers, 700,000 man hours and over 10 million km worth of testing.
Motive power is provided by a front-mounted electric motor producing 214 hp (218 PS, or 160 kW) and 320 Nm of torque. This is good enough to make the eMas 7 the fastest-accelerating Proton ever from standstill to 100 km/h, with 6.9 seconds needed for that. Meanwhile, top speed is 175 km/h.

The EV will go on sale in two variant forms, these being the Prime and Premium, and both get different battery capacities. The base Prime is equipped with a 49.52 kWh battery that offers up to 345 km of WLTP-rated t..

Proton X50 Sport Edition – based on 1.5T Premium, full black, red bodykit and accents, to go on sale later

Also unveiled at the Kuala Lumpur International Mobility Show (KLIMS) is the Proton X50 Sport Edition. As the name suggests, this variant gives the B-segment SUV a racier look, with a bodykit leading the changes.
The kit, which consists of a front splitter, side skirts and rear spats, is different from the R3-designed version seen before, here finished in red. It joins a stealthy aesthetic afforded by new black paint and a gloss black finish for the grille surround and tailgate garnish (previously satin chrome), as well as a red stripe along the car’s shoulder line.
Also fitted are new 18-inch ten-spoke gloss black alloy wheels, fitted to a lower-spec variant of the original Geely Binyue (the X50 usually gets the top-spec two-tone rollers on the Premium and Flagship variants). Finishing off the look is a chrome Sport Edition badge on the tailgate, with the car also gaining door sill scuff plates and a Qi wireless charger.
The Sport Edition is based on the upper-mid-spec Premium model, meaning it uses the port-injected 1.5 litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine, producing 150 PS and 226 Nm of torque, mated to a seven-speed wet dual-clutch transmission. It also means the car loses out on the Flagship’s driver assistance features such as autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control and lane centring assist.
Proton has yet to reveal if the car will have a limited run, nor has it provided the price. It has confirmed, however, that the Sport Edition will be sold to..

Proton S70 Concept shown at KLIMS 2024 – sportier sedan gets bodykit, lowered suspension, larger wheels

A year on from the launch of the Proton S70 and shortly after the sedan’s maiden foray into endurance racing at last month’s Sepang 1000KM, the national carmaker has brought a dressed-up version of the model to the 2024 Kuala Lumpur International Mobility Show (KLIMS), dubbed the S70 Concept.
Exhibited at the Proton booth in a metallic yellow exterior wrap finish, the S70 Concept wears a different scheme compared to that worn on the S70 R3 race car that finished fifth in its class at the endurance race (which is also being displayed at KLIMS 2024).
Here, the S70 Concept gets a front grille that retains the chrome pins, albeit here with a blacked-out frame in place of the road car’s chrome-finished unit. The front bumper gets a larger splitter in black that extends further from the bodywork, and has a pair of supports which mount to the lower intake panel.

On top, the S70 Concept gets a gloss black roof, and a pair of black racing stripes which run from the front of the bonnet to the rear of the bootlid. Here, the S70 Concept also gets a bootlid-mounted spoiler finished in black. Lower down, there are side skirts, and the rear bumper also gets a diffuser-esque extension.
Wheels are 18-inch alloys finished in gloss black, shod in Bridgestone Potenza RE004 Adrenalin tyres measuring 235/40R18. These house yellow-painted calipers, which appear to be the factory-standard units. Further chassis alterations include lowered springs.

As standard, the S70 is powered by a 1...

Geely not forgetting Proton – still committed to make Tg Malim its production and R&D hub for ASEAN

Geely has set up shop in Thailand and will be entering Australia and New Zealand next year – all right-hand-drive (RHD) markets – but the carmaker remains committed to Malaysia as its regional production and R&D hub.
“Geely remains dedicated to its initial pledge of making AHTV the regional production and R&D hub for the ASEAN markets,” Ash Sutcliffe, PR director of the Geely Holding Group told paultan.org in response to questions on the company’s commitment to Proton and Malaysia.
Automotive Hi-Tech Valley (AHTV) was announced in April 2022 as an international automotive hub for NEVs (new energy vehicles, China’s term for electrified vehicles), spearheaded by Geely. AHTV is in the Tanjung Malim area, which is also the home of Proton.

“Geely will enter and establish dealer networks in Proton’s non-existent markets, starting with NEV products to build brand reputation, which will be complementary to Proton’s existing products,” Sutcliffe added. This means that both Proton and Geely brands will not enter the same markets – while Proton was previously present in Thailand and Australia, the Malaysian brand has since ceased operations in those markets.
“Geely will leverage its resources in these markets, either to assist Proton’s future entry or to export products from Malaysia using AHTV as a production hub, maximizing synergies with Proton and our partner DRB-Hicom,” Geely’s PR chief said. Full context here.
