Proton New Energy Technology (Pro-Net) and JomCharge operator EV Connection (EVC) have struck a deal to provide free electric vehicle chargers to 100 condominiums that do not currently have charging facilities, as well as lower charging rates for the circa-70 condos already on the JomCharge network.
The Pro-Net-EVC Condominium EV Charging Infrastructure Programme, as it’s so called, allows the management of condos to apply for these free EV chargers through the EVC website. Once approved by both EVC and Pro-Net, successful applicants will be eligible for the charger itself as well as the all infrastructure work required, covered compliance costs, a charger management system and the porting onto the JomCharge network.
Also provided as part of the deal is a profit/revenue-sharing mechanism, letting building management earn some money from it. Condo charging rates are set at RM0.70 per kWh, and starting next year, owners of smart EVs and the forthcoming Proton eMas 7 will receive a 10% lower rate of RM0.63 per kWh. The companies claim this is almost as low as Tenaga Nasional’s electricity tariff for landed properties. Users at existing condo charging facilities with time-based rates will get a similar discount.
The collaboration is an expansion of an existing joint venture between Pro-Net and EVC that currently manages the supply, installation, operation and maintenance of home wallbox chargers for the smart brand, having completed more than 400 installations to date. The JomCharge network is also integrated into the Hello smart app and the smart #1 and #3‘s navigation system.
“As part of our imminent entry into the Malaysian EV market with the Proton eMas 7, we are proud to work with dynamic partners like EVC to introduce additional charging points to our integrated charging network, which is available via both the Proton eMas and Hello smart apps,” said Pro-Net CEO Zhang Qiang. “By providing convenient charging facilities – even for our customers who stay in condos – we believe it will not only add value but also remove any lingering barriers they might have to owning an EV.”
Managing director of EVC, Lee Yuen How, added: “EVC is delighted to partner with Pro-Net in ensuring Malaysia’s EV charging infrastructure continues to grow in tandem with the increased EV adoption in our nation. We also want to ensure that EV charging remains affordable to condominium dwellers, and this one of the main reasons why this programme was conceived.”
Pro-Net is gearing up for the launch of the eMas 7 this month, with an estimated starting price of RM120,000.
